Trust and violence in modern society

"A form of civilization is characterized by the designation of areas where violence is forbidden, permissible, or desirable. Social trust is tied to the stability of these zones. The evolutionary ideal of modernity is that the range of forbidden violence should expand at the expense of permissible and desirable zones of violence. Today, we believe that self-inflicted violence is appalling, illegitimate, and if we do encounter it, it is always caused by some individual pathology. Where it doesn't help, we declare it a mystery.
